What is lead distribution software?

Short answer

Lead distribution software collects leads from your traffic, filters out the bad ones, and routes each good lead to the right buyer, then tracks the money. This guide is about lead distribution for lead generators, affiliate networks and media buyers who sell leads, not sales teams assigning leads to reps.

Two meanings of the same words

Search for "lead distribution software" and many results are about sales teams: tools that assign new leads to reps by round robin or territory. That is a different job.

In performance marketing, lead distribution means selling leads you generate to buyers such as lenders, insurers or agencies. The software sits between your traffic and your buyers and has to handle routing, validation, delivery, tracking and payments.

What it should do

  • Capture: forms, links or an API for leads, with partial leads saved.
  • Filter: duplicate, consent, fake-data and fraud checks before a buyer sees the lead.
  • Route: ping trees (cascades), weighted splits and ping/post bidding.
  • Limit: caps and schedules so no buyer gets more than agreed.
  • Deliver: send each sold lead to the buyer's system by API or postback.
  • Track: click IDs and server-to-server postbacks, so every sale is credited to the right publisher.
  • Pay: what each publisher is owed, and statements for buyers, with returns and voids handled.
  • Report: quality, unsold leads, timing and demand, by source and buyer.

Build or buy

Building your own distribution system means developers to build it and more to maintain it: routing logic, delivery to every buyer, tracking, fraud checks and payout reporting. Most networks that are not software companies find buying cheaper and faster than building.

How lead distribution software is priced

Pricing models vary. Some vendors charge tiered monthly plans, some add per-lead or per-ping fees above an included volume, and some quote each customer. Our pricing comparison lists what each vendor publishes.

Questions

Who needs lead distribution software?

Lead generators, affiliate networks, media buyers and agencies that sell leads to more than one buyer, or that want to move beyond selling to a single buyer.

Is it the same as a CRM?

No. A CRM manages relationships with leads you work yourself. Lead distribution software sells leads on to buyers and tracks what each source earns.

Can I use it without a developer?

With pingtype, yes. Forms, rules, cascades, caps and buyer delivery are set up on screens. The API is available if you want to connect your own systems.
